Rent Arrears

The Co-operative understands that people may find themselves experiencing some financial difficulties at some point in their lives.  We recognise that you may not know where to turn to and this can very often lead to people falling behind with their rent payments.  

By failing to pay your rent you risk losing our home.  We want to avoid this happening and we are happy to assist and support you……the worst thing you can do is nothing!

If you are experiencing this and you feel overwhelmed, it is crucial that you seek help and contact the Co-operative immediately to speak with your Housing Officer, Susan Kane who can assist you.

A payment arrangement can be reached with you which will cover your rent charge plus an additional amount towards any arrears.  It is imperative that you keep to this arrangement to avoid legal action being taken against you.

An appointment can also be made with our AFTAR Project Advisor, Jodie McBride who can help anyone who requires support to claim benefits, maximise income, assist with financial / budgeting, debt, council tax and energy advice.

We can also signpost you to various agencies e.g. food banks, Scottish Welfare Fund etc.

What if I can’t make a Payment?

We will do all we can to help you deal with your rent arrears but you must reach out to us.  However, should you fail to engage with us and the rent arrears continue the Co-operative will have no choice but to take legal action against you.

We have an obligation to collect rent from every tenant.  Without income from the rent, we would not be able to repair and maintain your home.

A payment arrangement can be reached with you which will cover your rent charge plus an additional amount towards any arrears.  It is imperative that you keep to this arrangement to avoid legal action being taken against you.

What if I default with my payment arrangement or ignore my arrears?

We will do everything we can to help you stay in your home, however we CANNOT allow you to stop paying your rent indefinitely and you will receive a Notice of Proceedings.  This will be issued to the tenant and everyone in the household over the age of 16 years.

If you fail to make payments and contact your Housing Officer, the Co-operative will have no alternative but to instruct our Solicitor to seek a court date.  You would be notified in advance of the calling date.  On the court date we would ask the Sheriff to make a decision about your tenancy.

The most important thing you can do is deal with the issue and ask for help.  We want you to maintain your tenancy and help you to stay in your home!
